The Guidelines
In N. Cyprus although 95% of the houses use solar water heaters, solar energy is not used for other applications, such as producing electricity, space heating and day lighting. It would be very difficult to practice passive solar heating or cooling as 92% of the houses do not have any insulation. In this exercise it is required to make a simple design for retrofitting the following building by integrating the following concepts:
•Thermal insulation for the walls and the roof
•Double-glazing windows or better
•Passive solar heating (by using sunspace and Trombe wall)
•Passive solar cooling (by using shading devices and strategies, stack effect ventilation)
•Daylighting
•Active solar heating (by using air heaters)
•Solar water heating
•Photovoltaic systems for producing electricity
•Movable or removable shading devices to be used for summer
